After a proposed education bill addressing special education in schools caused an uproar from Oklahoma parents, an Oklahoma Senator clarified his intent is not to eliminate any “educationally necessary” services from students. According to social media posts, many have understood Senate Bill 1017 as proposing to eliminate medically necessary special education services such as speech therapy, occupational therapy and physical therapy in Oklahoma schools. The bill states that when not “educationally necessary,” they “are not the responsibility of the Oklahoma K-12 public schools and shall be the responsibility of the parents or guardians to provide for their children off campus and after school hours.”
